Wedding Couples
Congratulations! Learning to dance will make your wedding even more memorable. For the brides and grooms planning a wedding now is the time to start working on that special first dance. Captured on videotape, photographed, and captured and shared digitally for friends and family who can't attend the wedding, those first steps will be memorialized for many years to come.
If you are planning to get married, here are a few tips from the experts on learning to dance in preparation for your wedding:
- Don't wait until the last minute. Remember that your schedule will be hectic as your wedding day approaches. Dance instructors recommend starting four to six months earlier to allow more time for practice, especially if you are a newcomer to dancing.
- Remember that dance lessons can actually be a stress reliever. Dancing is good exercise. And lessons pull you out of the hustle and bustle of your day to spend an hour or so with your intended, having fun and working together productively at the same time.
- Select a song and bring it with you. If you plan to dance a special song at your reception, feel free to bring a copy of your music to all of your lessons so you can work on it with your instructor (and don't forget to coordinate with your wedding videographer and photographer for the best coverage of your special dance).
- Consider what you'll be wearing. Tails and a floor length gown will be great for the waltz, but not for salsa or swing.
- Learn other dances. If your honeymoson involves a cruise or resort, have your lessons include a variety of different dance styles so you're ready for anything.
- Include your parents and other members of the wedding party. It's a lot of fun and relieves stress for everyone.
- Practice in the shoes you'll be wearing. If you learn to waltz in a pair of flats but wear heels for your wedding, the difference may take you by surprise. Also, you'll be breaking in your shoes before the big day.
- Not what you might expect. If you think that most young couples today dream of their first dance at their wedding as a graceful waltz across the floor, think again! Most of today's soon-to-be newlyweds are abandoning slow, romantic ballads in favor of something that would have been considred shocking not too long ago… a sultry tango - perhaps one of the sexiest dances in ballroom - or a high energy salsa are more likely to be that special dance.
